Torah yads (pointers) are used by the person chanting from the Torah. Since oils from our hands would damage the parchment, Torah yads are used to preserve the Torah.

Torah yads, tradionally made from silver, used over decades have been found to leave marks behind on the Torah's parchment, underlining the lines of text. With the use of wood, not only is this issue addressed, but it returns wood and its beauty to the Torah.... to the Tree of Life.
